Laboratory test methods and quality determination standards for cold peel strength and thermal creep performance of EVA hot melt adhesive after edge banding

The preparation of the specimen should be carried out in strict accordance with the specified plate type, edge banding material and edge banding process parameters to avoid the introduction of test errors due to differences in the specimen.
The reliability of furniture edge banding quality needs to be evaluated through standardized laboratory testing methods, of which cold peel strength and thermal creep performance are two key indicators. The cold peel strength test is used to evaluate the firmness of the bonding between the edge banding strip and the sheet at room temperature. It is usually carried out by a universal material testing machine.During the test, the sealed specimen is prepared according to the standard size, and the stripping clamping part is reserved at one end of the edge banding strip, and the edge banding strip is peeled off from the surface of the plate at a constant speed, and the force value changes during the stripping process are recorded. The test results are expressed in terms of average peel force or peel strength per unit width, and different furniture standards have clear qualified determination limits for peel strength. The damage mode needs to be observed during the test. The ideal damage should be the damage of the edge banding strip or the substrate of the plate, rather than the pure bonding damage of the interface between the adhesive layer and the substrate.
The thermal creep performance reflects the deformation resistance of EVA hot melt adhesive under continuous force and temperature increase.Since EVA is a thermoplastic material, a slow plastic flow of the adhesive layer may occur when the temperature approaches its softening point.Thermal creep testing usually places the edge banding specimen in a constant temperature environment with a set temperature, and suspends a specific weight on the edge banding. After a specified time, measure the displacement of the edge banding or observe whether it falls off.The choice of test temperature is based on the most unfavorable use conditions that furniture products may encounter, and it is generally set in the range of 40℃ to 60℃.The test results are determined by the amount of displacement or whether it passes. For ordinary indoor furniture, it is required that the amount of displacement within a certain period of time does not exceed the specified limit.
Standardization of laboratory test environments is essential to obtain repeatable and comparable results. The preparation of the specimen should be carried out in strict accordance with the specified plate type, edge banding material and edge banding process parameters to avoid the introduction of test errors due to differences in the specimen. The temperature and humidity conditions need to be precisely controlled and recorded, because changes in temperature and humidity may affect the mechanical properties of the EVA adhesive layer. For edge banding strips of different thicknesses and colors, the test results may also be different, and judgment criteria need to be established separately.Furniture companies usually regard laboratory testing as a necessary part of the inspection of raw materials into the factory and the verification of new product development. Through systematic test data accumulation, the quality file of EVA hot melt adhesive is established to provide an objective basis for supplier selection and process optimization.
